Public Aquariums
Below, you will find links to and regarding public aquariums. Public aquariums are aquariums open for the public and they are usually considerably larger than the typical home aquariums kept by hobbyists. Today, modern aquaria can hold millions of .S. gallons of water and therefore house large and schooling species like dolphins. Some public aquaria, such as the Oregon Cost Aquarium, have aquatic aviaries, while others have created landscapes suitable for animals that spend some of their time on land, e.g. otters and seals. In addition to educating the public and providing entertainment, it is also common for public aquaria to be involved in captive breeding programs and conservational projects. The first public aquaria on record opened at the London Zoo in 1853. Three years later, Barnum's American Museum opened a public aquarium in New York, and in 1859 the Aquarial Gardens in Boston held their first exhibition.
Another important landmark in the history of public aquaria dates back to 1985 when Kelly Tarlton began construction of the first aquarium to include a large transparent acrylic tunnel through which visitors could walk and admire the inhabitants of Kelly Tarlton's Underwater World in Auckland, New Zealand. The tunnel is 110 meters long and built from one-tonne slabs of German sheet plastic that had been shaped locally in a special oven.
