Aquaculture

Below, you will find links related to the farming of freshwater and saltwater organisms, such as fish, crustaceans, and algae. Aquaculture, also known as aquafarming, has been practised for thousands of years. The Chinese began to keep carps in artificial lakes at least 2,500 years B.C. and eventually started feeding the fish silkworm faeces. In Japan, seaweed was cultivated on bamboo poles, and the Hawaiian people are known to have kept fish in ponds for at least 1,000 years. The ancient Egyptians kept tilapia on ponds along the Nile and fish keeping was also wide spread in the Roman Empire. Later on, this practise was adopted by Christian monks and the practise of keeping fish in ponds was widespread in Europe until the advent of modern refrigerators and fast transportations. Today, aquaculture is on the rise again due to the severe over-fishing of our oceans and consumer demands for fresh, not frozen, fish. Different types of aquaculture are known under different names; mariculture is for instance the cultivation of marine species, while algaculture is the farming of kelp, seaweed and other types of algae. Please note that we have a separate section for aquaponics; a special type of aquaculture where plants and aquatic animals are cultivated in a recirculating environment.
