General saltwater
Keeping a marine aquarium is generally considered more difficult than keeping a freshwater aquarium and thriving marine aquariums are usually kept by aquarists who started out with freshwater aquariums and gained some experience with them before setting up their first marine tanks. Also, saltwater aquariums tend to be more expensive since they need more powerful filtration to keep the water quality up. When purchasing equipment and decorations for your marine aquarium, it is imperative to choose items suitable for saltwater conditions. Unlike commonly kept freshwater species, marine creatures tend to require a very stable environment since they are used to life in the sea where organic waste and pollutants are diluted by the vastness of the ocean. Saltwater aquariums are usually divided into three different groups: Fish Only (FO), Fish with Live Rock (FWLR) and Reef Aquariums. Saltwater aquariums are also used to house squids, octopus, jellyfish and other types of animals that aren’t fish nor reef-associated, but such aquariums are uncommon compared to the three main types. Live rock is the hobby name for rocks or pieces of dead coral home to various marine organisms. When purchasing live rock you never know exactly what you’ll get; anything from beneficial bacteria to fairly large invertebrates can be hidden away inside its nooks and crannies. Live rock helps stabilize the water quality in the tank and makes it look more natural.
