On this page, you can find links pertaining to fish species and other aquatic creatures native to the USA. The United States is a vast country stretching from the Mexican border up to Canada, and it also includes the states of Alaska and Hawaii, as well as several territories in the Pacific and Caribbean Sea. Bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Atlantic to the east, and crisscrossed by rivers such as Mississippi, Colorado River, Missouri, and the Snake River, it comes as no surprise that the U.S. is home to a spectacular wildlife. Within the immense and varied territory that constitutes the USA, we find a lot of different species adapted to all sorts of fresh- and saltwater habitats. Some even survive in both and the Great Lakes of northern U.S. are for instance the sight of seasonal migrations of salmon and sturgeon from the Atlantic. These immense lakes are also plagued by invasive non-native species that disrupt the ecosystem, such as the zebra mussel, the blood sucking lamprey, the alewife (a small silvery fish), and small percid fish known as ruffe. The ecological history of the Great Lakes includes both great losses and great improvements and they are considered healthier today than what they were half a century ago. Despite this, human activities still poses a great threat to them.
