Pet Fish Directory - Arowanas

Arowanas

Arowanas are large, predatory fishes than need large aquariums or ponds. The largest species can reach a length of 120 centimeters (48 inches), but most species stay around 75 centimetres (30 inches). They are usually kept alone or with other large species that can stand their ground and won’t allow any bullying. When kept in a suitable environment and provided with proper care and diet, an arrowana can become a long-lived companion that survives for 20 years or more. One of the most commonly kept species of arowana is the Silver Arowana (Osteoglossum bicirrhosum). It is usually sold when its young and not very small, but it can grow 5 centimeters (2 inches) a month during its first year so don’t purchase it thinking you’ll get it a large enough aquarium “eventually”. The Asian Arowana (Scleropages formosus) used to be fairly common among aquarists, but it is now an endangered species and obtaining a wild caught specimen is therefore illegal in most parts of the world. Before you get a captive bred one, make sure you research the regulations applicable to your area to find out if you need any special documentation or permit. A little research can save you a lot of hassle.
