Characins

Characins are fish species belonging to the family Characidae in the order Characiformes. They are more commonly known under the name tetra and found in numerous aquariums world wide. This diverse group encompasses everything from the peaceful Neon tetra to the infamous Piranhas. All tetras are fairly small freshwater fishes native to tropical and subtropical waters. They are widespread throughout South- and Central America and can be found as far north as Texas, U.S. in North America. Tetras are covered in scales and a small fin is located behind the dorsal fin. Most species have compressed bodies. The most commonly kept tetra is the Neon tetra, but this family contains many other small and peaceful species that are fairly easy to care for in captivity and can be recommended for beginner and intermediate aquarists. The Black-skirt tetra is for instance even more durable than the Neon tetra. The common Cardinal tetra on the other hand is more sensitive than the Neon tetra and not an ideal choice for your first fish tank. For experienced aquarists, it is possible to keep even more delicate tetras like the Congo tetra that requires a very high water quality and is prone to skittish behaviour in the tank, especially if not provided with a large enough school and suitable hiding spots.
